VISUAL Q&A: Liran Finzi

Liran Sokolovski Finzi was introduced to photography, by his grandfather, at the age of six. Originally from Tel Aviv, Liran was inspired to create and began to travel. When taking pictures, Liran is interested in capturing, “a person’s unique, unpretentious spirit.” We asked Liran Sokolovski Finzi questions, questions that could only be answered with images…

Who are you?

Liran Finzi COOPH 001

Why photography?

Liran Finzi COOPH 002

My grandfather introduced me to photography, and from there it became a passion of mine. Photography allows me to express what I’m thinking and feeling in ways that words could never do. It can take you in all different directions and express all different types of feelings without saying a word.

What is your trademark photographic style?

Liran Finzi COOPH 003

I am very much a documentarian. I have a deep and intimate relationship with whom I photograph. I see people in the rawest and unfiltered way.

What truly inspires you?

Liran Finzi COOPH 004

Awareness and connection inspire me. When you connect with your subject, a story emerges. Moreover, sometimes the unexpected happens. Sometimes you know what you’re going to take, but later you see the bigger picture. There will be something hidden or a small detail that you may not have been aware of at the moment.

Where do you go when you close your eyes?

Liran Finzi COOPH 005

To sleep.

Where is home for you?

Liran Finzi COOPH 006

Home is everywhere at this moment Toronto, Canada.

How would you describe your lifestyle?

Liran Finzi COOPH 007

vision + passion + creativity

What makes a great shot?

Liran Finzi COOPH 008

Connection with people and a story without words. Filling your frame with this is what I always look to do.

How do you view the world?

Liran Finzi COOPH 009

I view the world as an unlimited potential to express and document. Photographic documentation is my contribution and my purpose. It’s important to me to connect with people to show their hardship or creativity or give them a voice when they have none. Glamour bores me. It’s predictable and orchestrated.

What is an important lesson you have learned?

Liran Finzi COOPH 010

Don’t give up on your passion. If you do, you’re sacrificing yourself, and it only gives you emptiness. Your passion drives you.
Even if it doesn’t fill your bank account.
